One of the key learnings that were taught by experts in business was: “Follow the system. Stick to the system. You are not greater than the system.”

This lesson was not easily adopted, given that many of those who get started in their business wish to try and experiment with new things. This way of thinking made them think that their way was better or could further refine the process.

This is fine if they want to be a scientist and their sole desire is to find out what works better than something else. But if they want to build something stable, secure, successful, and lucrative business, there is the need to have a system and a set process in place. The system is not only there as a guide, but for employees to be on the same page with the business’ direction.

These systems are important because it helps take an ordinary person and enables them to do things, otherwise, they would not have been able to do on their own.

This analogy was used all the time to get the message across:

There is a slow car, which starts shaking if it goes above 80km/hr and hits its peak at 120 and the other car which is a super-fast car and can go from 0 to 120 in a few seconds and can reach up to 240 at least. If you put a professional world champion driver in the slow car and an amateur in the super-fast car, the super-fast car will win, despite the expertise and experience of the professional world champion.

The lesson is that the system or the vehicle being used to leverage the relevant factors will always come out on top of talent and personal gusto. If they want to be a superhero, then can do it and probably do some amazing things, but one can only be in one place at a time and have limited hours in the day.

If you want to do average things then have a system with lots of inefficiencies and mistakes and confusion. This is characterized by lots of parts who have no idea what they are doing or what anybody else is doing. There is no common purpose and nobody is on the same page. The information is not readily shared between people or teams and anything that is shared is slow to get to where it needs to be. One person has one way of doing something and another person has another way and they all pretend to agree but continue to do whatever they like, having processes for the sake of it but not actually living it and letting it reduce the workload and the effort required.

This is like a slow car. You’ll still get places, but very slowly and painfully. If you put amazing people into this vehicle they will become frustrated and disillusioned with the lack of results and the amount of effort they have to exert for a very small gain and traction.

If you want to move, implement and expand quickly then get a system whereby everyone and everything is on the same page, streamlined and perfected so that there are no double handling and inefficiencies in processes. This is the fast car approach and makes all the difference because then having amazing people just becomes a bonus.
